Deaf people and people with severe hearing impairments are separated from the rest of society by an invisible barrier to communication. The difficulties of communication hinder their access to information and limit their social participation. However, qualified interpreters open up the opportunity for the deaf to get involved in public life as equals. Academically trained sign language interpreters create the possibility for comprehensive integration of the deaf and those with severe hearing impairments into our society.
