Prof. Dr. rer. pol. habil. Dr. h.c. Bernd Zirkler (Jahrgang 1970) studierte von 1991 bis 1996 Betriebswirtschaftslehre mit den Schwerpunkten Rechnungswesen, Controlling, Industriebetriebslehre und Wirtschaftsenglisch an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Danach nahm er an der Fakultät für Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften der FAU eine Stelle als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter von Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Männel am Lehrstuhl für Rechnungswesen und Controlling an. Im Zuge seiner wissenschaftlichen Assistenz verbrachte Prof. Zirkler im Jahr 1996 einen Forschungsaufenthalt an der Harvard Business School (Boston, USA) bei Prof. Robert S. Kaplan.

Von Juli 1996 bis Mai 2001 war er hauptberuflicher wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Rechnungswesen und Controlling der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der FAU.

Ab 1999 übernahm Prof. Zirkler Lehraufträge an den Universitäten Eichstätt-Ingolstadt und Oestrich-Winkel (European Business School) sowie an den Fachhochschulen Weihenstephan und Ingolstadt.

Prof. Zirkler promovierte (summa cum laude) im Mai 2001 über „Führungsorientiertes US-amerikanisches Management Accounting“ an der FAU unter der Betreuung von Herrn Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Wolfgang Männel.

Von Juni 2001 bis Februar 2008 war er hauptberuflicher wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Lehrstuhl für Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Rechnungswesen und Controlling der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der FAU.

Für die Unternehmensberatung Horváth & Partners arbeitet er seit 2006 als freiberuflicher Berater und Trainer. Außerdem wirkte er an einer Reihe betriebswirtschaftlicher Gutachten u. a. im Gesundheitswesen und der Energiewirtschaft mit sowie moderierte und referierte auf zahlreichen Fachkongressen.

Prof. Zirkler habilitierte im Januar 2009 über „Kapitalflussrechnungen – Erstellung im Rahmen nationaler und internationaler Rechnungslegungsnormen und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten im finanz- und wertorientierten Controlling“ an der FAU unter der Betreuung von Herrn Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. pol. habil. Thomas M. Fischer.

Im März 2009 folgte er dem Ruf auf die Eckprofessur für Allgemeine Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Rechnungswesen/Controlling an die Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau und wurde im Juni 2012 zum Prodekan der Fakultät Wirtschaftswissenschaften gewählt. Im Januar 2014 wurde er zum Stellvertretenden Direktor des Instituts für Betriebswirtschaft gewählt und ist seit April 2021 der Geschäftsführende Direktor.

Für sein besonderes akademisches Engagement wurde Prof. Zirkler von der Kazakh-American Free University (KAFU) im September 2019 die Ehrendoktorwürde verliehen und seit 2023 ist er Gastprofessor an der KAFU.

In Forschung und Lehre liegen seine Schwerpunkte vorwiegend auf den Gebieten der integrierten Controllingkonzepte, Digitalisierung & Controlling, nachhaltigkeitsorientiertes Controlling sowie US-Management Accounting. Prof. Zirkler ist Verfasser zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Fachbeiträge und mehrerer Bücher.

Prof. Dr. rer. pol. habil. Dr. h. c. Bernd Zirkler (born in 1970) studied Business Administration at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) from 1991 to 1996 with majors on Accounting, Industrial Management and Business English. After that, he became a research assistant at Professor Wolfgang Männel's Chair of Management Control and Accounting, at School of Business, Economics and Society at FAU. During his time as a research assistant, he stayed at Harvard Business School (Boston, USA) for a PhD research cooperation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert S. Kaplan.

From July 1996 to May 2001, he was a full-time research assistant at the Chair of Financial and Management Accounting at School of Business, Economics and Society at FAU.

From 1999, Prof. Zirkler worked as a lecturer at the universities Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Oestrich-Winkel (European Business School) as well as at the Universities of Applied Sciences in Weihenstephan and Ingolstadt.

In May 2001, Prof. Zirkler completed his doctorate (summa cum laude) with a thesis on "Führungsorientiertes US-amerikanisches Management Accounting" from FAU under the supervision of Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Wolfgang Männel.

From June 2001 to February 2008, he was a full-time research assistant at the Chair of Financial and Management Accounting at School of Business, Economics and Society at FAU.

Since 2006 he has worked for the management consultancy Horváth & Partners as a freelance consultant and coach. Furthermore, he has contributed to numerous economic papers, for example in the healthcare and the energy sector and has given lectures at many conventions.

In the year 2009, Prof. Zirkler finished his postdoctoral degree on "Kapitalflussrechnungen – Erstellung im Rahmen nationaler und internationaler Rechnungslegungsnormen und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten im finanz- und wertorientierten Controlling" at FAU under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. pol. habil. Thomas M. Fischer.

In March 2009, he was appointed as professor at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and since then, he has held the Chair of Business Administration, especially Accounting and Management Control. In June 2012, he was elected Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Moreover, in January 2014, he was elected Vice Director of the Institute of Business Administration and since April 2021 he is now Executive Director.

Due to his academic commitment, Prof. Zirkler has been conferred with an honorary degree of the Kazakh-American Free University (KAFU) in September 2019. Since 2023 he has been a Visiting Professor of the KAFU.

His research and teaching focuses on integrated controlling concepts, digitalisation & management control, sustainability oriented management control and US Management Accounting. Prof Zirkler is the author of numerous academic articles and several books.
